Yellow rubber duck with glasses floating

How to prevent fogged glasses in the bath

posted in: Bathroom, House | 1

Every Saturday, for many years now, I treat myself a looooong soak in a bubble bath.

It’s my carrot that keeps me going to the end of each week.

For me, the essentials for a luxuriously satisfying bath are:

  • Lots of bubbles! (Minimum height: half a metre)
  • Rubber duck (If you say you’ve outgrown them, have you outgrown fun? Life?)
  • Cappuccino – mmm, the time to really savour it
  • Orange juice – hot baths make me really thirsty, I start with a 3 litre bottle and by the end it’s half gone…
  • Bath-appropriate music
  • And the SMH cryptic crossword

I need glasses to read and complete the crossword and with all that nearby rising steam they don’t take long to fog up.

But there’s an easy way to beat fogged glasses

The thing is to ask yourself; why do they fog up in the first place? Well, when the lovely warm steam coming off your bath hits the colder lenses of your glasses it condenses on the surface making you peer through fog.

However, if the lenses are warmed to the same temperature, the steam will just pass on by leaving your vision unaffected.

This is simply achieved by just dipping them into the bath water – after only a couple of seconds, they’ll be as warm as they need to be. (I’m a bit of a heat junkie – no cold tap used in my bath) And once they’re on your face your body temperature will usually keep them clear.

You’ll notice in the video that the dipped lenses are still soapy after wiping across a towel – that’s because my usual film crew wasn’t there (best idea all ‘round) to allow use of both hands and adequately complete the drying off. (I was obviously holding the phone/camera in the other hand.)

Setting the mood for the perfect bath

Keen observers will also have seen my groovy little Sony Bluetooth speaker. A crucial component of my bath experience is the podcast of Utility Fog, Peter Hollo’s self-described “postfolkrocktronica” music show aired weekly on FBi Radio. It has exactly the right vibe and, at 2 hours long, just the right length too. (I know… pure hedonism)

I’ve usually knocked off the cryptic early into his show, allowing me to kick back and drift off with the mellow toons…

I was beaten by one clue in this case; 21 down – since solved with the help of my old mate Rick – cheers

Stay tuned – I’ll be adding more Dadsplained bathroom tips as they spring to mind…

This is great, lots of great tips I need to try for my next bath! I haven’t tried doing my crossword puzzles there either. Great tip about the glasses! Makes so much sense. I am surprised I haven’t really tried that but just admitted defeat and left the glasses in the bedroom
