Preparing for your wash: Part 1

Hardly any breakthroughs here, just the kind of commonsense that anyone experienced will have picked up…

Eg: Everyone would surely know to go through pockets first – you only need to miss one tissue to learn that lesson. Also…

  • Don’t mix new coloured items with anything white – that’s just asking for trouble.
  • Even if the colours have been through a few times make sure they’re not left in a wet lump with the rest of the wash for any time – more trouble.
  • Most things are best NOT turned inside-out before washing because whatever’s on the outside becomes on the inside – the dirt and fluff on trousers, say, would have quite a job finding their way down the legs and may still be trapped when removed from machine.
  • Unroll rolled-up socks before tossing them in – otherwise they’re just dirt traps. (I never personally experienced the left over ‘odd sock’ phenomenon and attribute it to folk myth…)
  • Any tightly bundled item, like a sheet, stands a good chance of coming out the way it went in – and not properly clean – so check everything is loosened up a bit first.
  • And it’s amazing how much gets caught in the lint trap – it makes a big difference to the wash so not a bad idea to try and clean it out every time.
